Hazel Park Drama

Curricular opportunities:
Drama I 

This semester-long course introduces students to the dramatic arts, especially live theatre. Creativity, collaboration, and perseverance are emphasized, as well as other life skills, such as interpersonal communication and presentational speaking. Key explorations include theatre history and vocabulary, physical and vocal acting, playwriting and dramatic structure, and arts appreciation. Students create individual and group projects throughout the semester, just as they would encounter in the professional world.

Drama II 
This semester-long course introduces students to the dramatic arts, especially film and video. Creativity, collaboration, and perseverance are emphasized, as well as other life skills, such as interpersonal communication and presentational speaking. Key explorations include cinema history and vocabulary, on-camera acting, screenwriting and dramatic structure, and arts appreciation. Fundamentals of multimedia production are also covered. Students create individual and group projects throughout the semester, just as they would encounter in the professional world.

Advanced Theatre & Video 
This highly selective year-long repeatable course refines improvisational skills, on-camera performance, and creative-management abilities through student-directed mini plays, video projects, and HPTV, a student-led broadcast variety show. Students work to satisfy the aesthetic, intellectual, informational, and emotional needs of both maker and spectator via writing, directing, acting, and editing. Classmates collaborate on several projects simultaneously throughout the semester and on deadline, just as they would encounter in the professional world.

Productions 
(for high school students)
An ambitious play and a lavish musical are mounted each year. Audition and/or interview required to participate. 

International Thespian Society
Excellence is celebrated and deepened through elite membership in Troupe 4443 of the International Thespian Society. This invitation-only organization honors high schoolers for exemplary contributions to Drama and the community. Additional levels of achievement can be earned through theatre/film scholarship, service, and leadership.

Drama Club
(for high school students)
This social group plans and enjoys regular bonding activities, including movie nights, attendance at shows, scavenger hunts, potlucks, and more. Open to all students with an interest in theatre and film.

Playlabs
(for elementary and junior high students)
Thanks to a partnership with local nonprofit Michigan Stage, performance skills are fostered at a young age via in-school storytelling and after-school devised-theatre programming.
