Family Medical Leave Act
When you or a loved one experience a serious health condition that requires you to take time off from work, the stress from worrying about keeping your job may add to an already difficult situation. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) may be able to help.
Whether you are unable to work because of your own serious health condition, or because you need to care for your parent, spouse, or child with a serious health condition, the FMLA provides unpaid, job-protected leave. Leave may be taken all at once, or may be taken intermittently as the medical condition requires. This guide provides a simple overview of how the FMLA may benefit you. In your time of need, sometimes you just need time.
The following are informational documents and forms:

Pre-Student Teacher/Service Hours
Overview
Hazel Park Schools works hard to ensure that the student teaching, internship and field experience program is rewarding for all involved. It is important to build upon the relationships with our college/university partners and identify ways to continuously improve the K-12 field experience program. This guidance document is intended for colleges/universities who are requesting Pre-Student Teacher, Field Experience/ Service Hours or Embedded Course Placements.
Process
Hazel Park Public Schools requires that all requests come directly from the college/university field experience supervisor or the student teacher/intern to Dr. Carla Postell, Executive Director of Teaching, Learning & Equity, who serves as the district liaison for field experience/student teacher placements. Requests must be submitted to Dr. Carla Postell at the Pre Student Teacher/Service Hours 2023-2024 Registration Forms v2 form.
If applicable, Hazel Park Schools verifies if a current MOU agreement is on file or if an MOU needs to be drafted and signed.
Dr. Carla Postell reviews the information submitted by the university and/or the pre-student teacher candidate. Dr. Postell will confirm with the schools(s)/principal(s) who have a potential mentor match.
The potential mentor teacher may contact the student teacher candidate to schedule an interview or request more information from the teacher candidate before offering and accepting the placement.
Once the student teacher/intern is matched, Dr. Carla Postell will send communication to confirm placement AND connect the pre-student teacher/intern candidate with the Human Resources Department for proper on-boarding. The Human Resources Department will take over the process once the candidate has been confirmed for placement.
Please note that ALL student teacher/intern candidates must be properly on-boarded (fingerprinted/clear background check) through the Hazel Park Human Resources Department.
When the candidate has completed the onboarding process, they will be contacted by the Human Resources Department and provided details and directions on the next steps.
The student teacher/intern will work with the principal and mentor teacher to schedule the start of the student teaching experience based on university guidelines and district calendars.
