For current up to date schedule please visit BEAUMONT'S FREE STUDENT HEART SCREENINGJANUARY 26THEvery year, student athletes die from sudden cardiac arrest due to abnormal heart structure or abnormal rhythms. To help detect those at risk for sudden cardiac arrest, Beaumont began offering free heart checks to high school students. In total, Beaumont has screened more than 8,500 student athletes since the program began in 2007. Nearly two years ago, 15-year-old Darius Loving, of Belleville, Mich., was a three-sport athlete. As a high school freshman, he played high school basketball, football and baseball. Even though Darius showed no signs of any kind of heart trouble, his mother Ta'i signed him up for one of Beaumont's student athlete heart screenings. Doctors there discovered that Darius suffered from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition that could lead to cardiac arrest. Luckily, Darius' story came with a happy ending and he's able to continue playing baseball with a heart monitor. His story was also featured in a GE television commercial that aired during the 2012 Summer Olympics. Beaumont has another free, student heart screening scheduled for January 26 at Sola Life & Fitness in Rochester Hills. If your child is currently playing sports or will be in the spring, register for a heart screening today.
